Trade Directories

Bentley Directories

1834, 1838, 1857, 1893 and 1927

Before the Yellow Pages and the Thompson Local if you wanted to find a tradesman you would have had to consult one of the various trade directories. These were produced annually and covered groups of towns and villages, and often whole counties.

London was the first place to have a directory in 1734. After that, towns and cities who had an overseas trade got them, and by 1781 county directories were available.

Various types and producers of directories followed on, but the most recognized names are those of White, Baines and Kelly. Kelly's was established in 1799 and by 1845 they were producing directories which covered every town and village in Great Britain. Production continued until the early 1970's, but the availability of telephone directories and the Yellow Pages led to their demise.

Information included in a typical Kelly's Directory consisted of a list of private residents, commercial businesses and their owners, official information, such as council members, parish information, schools etc.

The books were only meant to last a year and then be thrown away when the new edition came out, so these books are quite collectible now. As the information is useful to family and local historians, many directories have been digitized and are available online, on sites such as Ancestry.

The information from five Bentley directories are available below and include the surrounding hamlets of Hall Villa, Bodles, Scawthorpe and Bridge Foot.
